Don't Eat Your Seed
“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night sha! not cease.” Gen 8:22
While we all may agree with this truth and espouse this as a God breathed “spiritual law” it seems that more often than not we have overlooked the importance of “seeding/sowing” in our lives. Unfortunately a mindset has crept into our lives that constantly have us looking for “what’s in it for me”, “what suits me”, “what fits into my plans for my life” or “how can God bless me”. This in turn has many believers eating their seed rather than planting it and allowing God to produce a harvest! God’s law of seedtime and harvest is the difference between surviving and living! Sow now to live – eat now to survive. My challenge to you as well as myself is to not eat your seed – It won’t fill you up! In 1 Kings 17 we read the s tor y of the widow and her son and in v e r s e 1 3 , “Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a sma! cake "om it first, and bring it to me; and a$erward make some for yourself and your son" Now some may accuse Elijah of selfishness or misusing his position of power but Elijah wasn’t asking from a selfish spirit. He had been journeying for some time and I’m sure that he was hungry, but the real reason for his request was to allow the widow the opportunity to rely on God’s promise of Seedtime and Harvest. The widow had a choice, she could obey the command of Elijah and sow or she could eat her seed and die.
Elijah didn’t hesitate to ask for the first cake. He knew that God was going to provide. God wants your first fruits, not your leftovers. Elijah could have let the widow woman and her son eat first, but then what would have been left to provide for the ministry that had come to her? There are too many people today who would have told Elijah no! The attitude today is “me, myself and I first” and everything and everyone, including God second. A lot of Christians only give God their leftover time, their spare change, and the last few minutes of a long day, if they give Him anything at all. We give God the leftovers of our life and then we wonder why our lives are lacking so much in so many ways. That is eating your seed! That part of your life that belongs to God must be given first as the seed from which your faith and provision will grow. The problem with most of us is that we eat our seed before God can use it to grow a blessing. 1 Kings 17:14-15, “For thus says the LORD God of Israel: “The bin of flour sha! not be used up, nor sha! the jar of oil run dry, until the day the LORD sends rain on the earth.” So she went away and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and her household ate for many days.” The oil would refi! and the flour would multiply a$er every meal.
God’s power to provide for our need is not limited by what we see, only by what we can believe for and by the obedience and faith we put in him. Dear friends don’t eat your seed - sow it according to the Word of God and allowencouragement. If we as believers can activate God’s law of seedtime and harvest in every facet of our lives – If we can sow our seed and not eat it, then truly God can use us to bring blessing to His kingdom.
